Would you give vaginal odor a chance to snatch your hubby? Have you ever wondered why your partner who takes delight in washing the dish is suddenly numb? I mean you asked him to go down on you last night, and he was like “baby, I don’t feel like washing plate today” and there you were at one corner of the bed trying to figure out why he has refused to make you speak in tongues using his tongue.
Well, worry no more. I have good news for you in today’s fellowship!
Aside from the known causes of low libido in men which include but not limited to; low testosterone, use of certain medication, restless leg syndrome, depression, chronic illness, sleep problems, aging, stress, low self-esteem, just to mention a few.
It is possible you have developed a vaginal odor that is turning him off. Oh, yes! The reason he has not told you yet is that he doesn’t want to hurt your feelings.
Understand, every woman is always self-conscious about how her vagina smells yet vaginal odor is one of the least discussed topics amongst women and between partners. A great excuse would be; such a construct makes women feel insecure, apprehensive and uncomfortable, so they don’t talk about it no matter what.
You must understand that though all vaginas have a smell that’s strange, every woman has a unique and natural smell peculiar to her vagina. This smell is often described as “musk scent” and there is no problem with that. It is normal!
But once you notice that the smell of your vagina has changed from its natural fragrance to any other smell not familiar to your body, then there is a cause for alarm because those foul odors show that something has gone wrong.
WHY DO YOU HAVE A STRONG ODOR DOWN THERE?
Researchers published a public opinion in New York Times in 2015 concluded that women are most frequently concerned that their vaginas smell like fish followed by vinegar, onions, ammonia, garlic, cheese, body odor, urine, bread, bleach, feces, sweat, metal, feet, garbage, and rotten meat.
CAN IMBALANCE DIET CAUSE VAGINAL ODOR?
Yes! Since whatever we eat can also be excreted by the body through body fluids, a woman’s diet is capable of influencing her vaginal odor. The vagina is acidic in nature having a pH of between 4.9 and 3.5. This pH is contributory to the natural scent of the vagina. Any upset in this pH range can cause an unpleasant vaginal smell.
WHAT CHANGES VAGINAL PH?
More than a few conditions and infections can affect the vaginal pH balance, usually by increasing pH levels.
The foods we eat have different degrees of acidity and alkalinity. Acidic foods such as Oranges make the vagina smell and taste better while strong spices, onions, garlic, alcohol can cause an unpleasant smell.
CAN INFECTIONS CAUSE VAGINAL ODOR?
Vaginal infections whether sexually transmitted or not can cause an unpleasant vaginal smell. This is as a result of the foul-smelling discharges that come along with these vaginal Infections.
The vagina contains lots of bacteria generally known as normal Flora. They are commensal (a relationship in which one organism derives food or other benefits from another organism without hurting or helping it) in nature and help to maintain the pH of the vagina. They become harmful only when there is an upset in the pH of the vagina.
Bacterial vaginosis is a non-sexually transmitted vaginal Infection caused by the overgrowth of species of vaginal bacteria called Gardnerella vaginalis which gives a foul-smelling fishy odor to the vagina.
Yeast infection also is known as vaginal thrush or candidiasis makes the vaginal have a beer, bread or flour-like odor.
Sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea also come with foul-smelling discharges and odors.
If you are experiencing a foul-smelling vaginal discharge coupled with itching or burning sensation when urinating, please consult your doctor who will place you on antibiotics or antifungals, depending on the microorganism responsible for the cause of the Infection.
In addition to that, desist from having oral sex with people who have oral thrush as they can easily transmit it to you, reduce the number of sex partners you have and always ensure you have safe sex by using condoms when you are not sure about your partner’s sexual health.
Always keep your dildos, vibrators and other sex toys clean after usage to prevent the introduction of diseases causing organisms into the vagina during the next use.
CAN MENSTRUATION AND MENOPAUSE CAUSE VAGINAL ODOR?
Menstruation and menopause can also affect how a woman’s vagina smells. Some women usually observe a subtle change in the smell of their vagina whenever they are on their period or during menopause.
This vaginal smell is often described as a “metallic or coppery scent” and it is due to hormonal fluctuations and the discharge of blood during menstruation. There is no cause for alarm since this smell is only temporary, all you need to do is to be on top of your personal hygiene and always change your sanitary pads when necessary whenever you are on your period.
CAN POOR HYGIENE CAUSE VAGINAL ODOR?
Personal hygiene is an issue for some ladies and this can make the vagina develop a foul smell.
Some women find it difficult to have their bath at least twice a day let alone changing their underwear when necessary. Every lady has her favorite underwear, the one she likes wearing always because it makes her feel more comfortable. It is not uncommon to see a lady wear a particular pant throughout the day and still wear it the next day without washing it because it is her favorite underwear.
I want you to understand two things, firstly, as a woman, you have more sweat glands in your armpit, your groins and around your vagina regions and so you tend to sweat more in these places. Secondly, the vagina is secretory in nature.so when your personal hygiene is very low, these vagina secretions and sweats provide an environment for bacterial activities leading to vaginal odor.
So always have an excellent hygiene practice by having your bath as often as you can, Change your underwear at least once a day or more frequently if you engaged in any physical activity that made you sweat.
Stop suffocating your vagina! Always wear breathable, less tight, cotton underwear so that you can get some fresh air down there. Each time you urinate or defecate, don’t forget to wipe you from front to back (vaginal region to the anal region) instead of back to front, this is to prevent the introduction of fecal matter containing bacteria into the vagina.
Most times, some women who have vaginal smell tend to apply perfumes around their vaginal region to mask the foul smell while others wash their vaginal with soap hoping to wash out the foul odor but all these practices are not helpful as they not only alter the pH of the vagina but can also cause other Infections. Douching is not encouraged but you can wash your vulva (the folds of skin surrounding the opening of the vagina) with mild soap.
CAN THE PRESENCE OF SEMEN CAUSE VAGINA ODOR?
The semen is alkaline, which is the opposite of the vagina’s acidic environment. When semen enters the vagina, it may temporarily influence the pH. Because of its slightly alkaline pH, healthy semen should have an “ammonia or bleach-like kind of smell,” and will taste a bit sweet (because of the fructose) and salty
CAN TAKING ANTIBIOTICS CAUSE VAGINA ODOR?
Antibiotics like the name imply kill bacteria, while it was mostly taken to destroy harmful bacteria, these medications can kill good bacteria as well. Of course, bacteria that form part of the normal flora in the vagina are not spared.
Some antibiotics are metabolized and removed from the body in the form of sweats, urine and other body fluids including vaginal fluid. If a person is taking antibiotics, their vaginal pH may be out of balance.
HOW TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY VAGINA?
Once the pH of your body and indeed the pH of your vagina is consistently healthy, chances of you having a bad vaginal odor are pretty slim.
In order to maintain a healthy PH here are a few tips for you:
- Proper use of a condom. A lot of couples would not subscribe to this idea. But you have to also understand that the barrier will not only protect you from STDs but it’ll also prevent alkaline semen from disrupting your vaginal pH levels.
- Take probiotics. This can help restore your PH, it works differently compared to antibiotics, mostly live bacteria and yeasts that are good for you, especially your digestive and urinary system.
- Don’t douche. This practice can increase the pH level in the vagina. Your vagina is naturally self-cleaning. Wash only the outside of your vagina with a bar of mild soap and water when you shower.
- Eat yogurt. While nourishing your body by adding calcium and vitamin D to your mineral storage, it also provides your body with beneficial bacterial species of Lactobacillus (this helps your body convert sugars to lactic acid).
- See your gynecologist often. As part of keeping your healthy routine, regular exams can help you maintain your vaginal health.
Please don’t let vaginal odor deprive you of the sexual pleasure you crave for.
