HOW MANY TIMES A DAY SHOULD YOU FART TO BE HEALTHY | 8 AWESOME WAYS TO DEBLOAT

Do you know how many times you have to fart to be healthy? Or maybe you have heard each time you pass gas there’s a substantial amount of calorie drop that can actually contribute to overall weight loss? Farting is one of those nature calls that resonate with everybody; there is no shame to it.

FART

Today’s post is a 7min read that’ll probably make you giggle as you’ll discover amazing stuff about your body when you fart. There’s this yarn that; love is like a fart. If you have to force it, it’s probably a crap. For those that love to pass gas in public? Gather here you might want to read this one to the end.

fart

Even when everybody farts, there’s usually something amusing about breaking the wind. Some notable people have made a career out of the fart industry. The pioneer of fart entertainment was Joseph Pujol (1857-1945), who used the stage name Le Petomane (fartomaniac). He used his flatulence to blow out candles, play the flute, and “smoke” cigarettes. [20]

That was centuries ago, however, Mr Methane is today’s professional Performing Flatulist, specializing in the “Art of Controlled Anal Voicing”, and has performed at comedy festivals around the world’’.

Another genius verified in the Guinness World Book of Records, as the longest documented fart which went on for a whopping two minutes and 42 seconds, released by Bernard Clemmens of the UK [20].

These people have achieved a great feat with their farting, as a matter of fact, breaking the wind is the greatest one-liner of all time.

Clinicians are very serious people, sometimes, while reviewing a post-cesarean section patients, I can’t wait to analyze the feedback on their faces. When asking about their fart habits, the initial reaction is usually a warm smile, followed by a shy and unwilling response.

As part of a routine, this assessment is important to determine the bowel activity and overall movement of the gut and to evaluate the effects of anesthesia on the body.

Clinicians say the average person farts anywhere from 5 to 15 times per day [1]. Farting is a good way to evaluate the activity of your guts’ bacteria. As you may have observed, you pass more gas when you eat certain types of foods that are tougher to digests, such as legumes (beans), eggs or uncooked vegetables.

So if it’s normal to break the wind, is there any recommended dose?

HOW MANY TIMES A DAY SHOULD YOU FART?

Have you ever been so keen to count the number of times you pass gas a day? Even when you can count, do you know the amount of gas that actually escapes each time you break the wind?

Experts say [2] that it’s normal to pass gas between 10 and 20 times daily; however, more than that could be outside the characteristic range of flatulence and could signify a digestive issue.

However, a publication by Erica Cirino[4], medically reviewed by Karen Cross, FNP, MSN claims ‘’about 200millilitres of gas per day passes through your body in 10 or 20 farts a day’’.

Dr. Michael D. Levitt, chief of staff at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center supposedly published possibly 300 papers on a fart. He concluded that there are only about 110 milliliters of gas in a normal fart [16].

According to Danielle Dresden of medical newstoday.com, the average person produces 0.6–1.8 liters of intestinal gas each day.

I can’t help but wonder what equipment they used. Not sure what your rejoinder would be, but if you’re thinking about counting or measuring your farts? You need a more serious way to pastime.

Some clinicians are merely interested in your verbal response to questions concerning the quantity and quality of your fart, and not the real thing.  Patient’s response is usually enough data to make a diagnosis.

IS IT HEALTHY TO FART A LOT?

Farting on a regular basis is normal, it’s considered healthy in facts. As Kimberly Rowland [3] inferred in her article ‘’Farting a lot isn’t necessarily bad, but it could be a sign of a digestive issue, inappropriate or imbalanced diet. Yes, certain foods produce gas; nonetheless, they assist with balancing your gut’s bacteria, which can make you break the wind more regularly.’’

Aside from your DNA, chances are, your lifestyle is a distinguishable feature and so is your fart habit. Health according to WHO [5] should be ‘’a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’’

While health is an amorphous word that lacks a single definition, individual, social or cultural perception of health and disease plays a significant role in describing the onset of illness. Bottom line, if you’ve noticed that you’re passing gas too little or too much? It’s probably time to visit a clinician.

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU HAVE TO FART TO LOSE WEIGHT?

fart

According to Erica [5], ‘’A popular Internet claim from 2015 said that one fart burned 67 calories, and that passing gas 52 times a day would burn 1 pound (0.45 kg) of fat. The proponent of this claim could not provide enough evidence to substantiate the assertion and is, therefore, false [6].

Expert posits that breaking the wind is just a passive activity, by passive it means farting makes no change to your weight.

However, if you’re planning to drop weight by farting it out? This claim might make you want to review your weight loss plans. Invariably, ‘’while passing gas, your muscles basically relax and the pressure in the guts pushes the gas out effortlessly’’ [4].  You can only burn calories when your muscles are involved in an active exercise.

Similarly, according to Elaine Magee [7], while exercising, you tend to use muscles. ‘’This helps build muscle mass, and muscle tissue burns more calories — even when you’re at rest — than body fat.’’

So while you cannot fart your way into a thin body, the good news is, training your muscles could naturally turn your whole body into a fat-melting machine and not merely utilizing farting as an unorthodox way of burning calories.

WHY DO I FART SO MUCH?

While breaking the wind might be normal, it’s not healthy to fart all day long. Excessive gas can be a salient symptom; the body may be reacting strongly to certain foods. ‘’This can point to food intolerance or that you have a digestive system disorder. For example irritable bowel syndrome, constipation or heartburn‘’ [8][9].

Most of the time, your diet and lifestyle play a big role in controlling excessive farting. But in more severe cases, the right decision would be to seek medical help immediately.

WHY DO YOU PASS GAS WHEN YOU LAUGH?

Undoubtedly, our nose and mouth meet at a point known as the pharynx. ‘’This is divided into the oropharynx and the nasopharynx, respectively the parts where the mouth and the nose share this structure. The oropharynx is behind the soft palate of the mouth and is below the nasopharynx. It serves as a passageway for food moving from the mouth to the esophagus and for air moving to and from the nasal cavity’’ [11]. Characteristically, we all swallow air all day long while swallowing. Secondly, bacteria in our stomach make additional gas from some of our meals. This gas would definitely come out one way or the other, either as belches, hiccups or farts.

Summarizing a quote by Division of Adolescent and Yong Adult Boston Children’s Hospital on their website[10] ’’ when you chuckle,  giggle, howl, roar, scream or whatever form your laughter may take, laughing so hard can force the air out of your rectum quickly – hence the laughing fart.

In as much as this can happen to anybody, however, for me, I’ve decided to reserve farting for bathrooms or maybe if the environment is favorable and I can squeak out a silent one. Marriage experts would probably paint a romantic picture of couples who fart in front of each other. Some couples actually believed breaking the wind in front of each other just means two people are in love and totally at ease around each other [12].  Yet, breaking the wind may be an embarrassing way to express love especially in public.

WHY DOES MY FART SMELL SO BAD?

There are a couple of reasons your gas smells so bad, the chief reason is a diet that does not have a proper mixture of nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

A nutritional cause of bad smelling fart is usually not fatal or life-threatening. These are some reasons fart stinks so badly.

  • High fiber meals take longer to digest- Therefore undergoing fermentation in the stomach as time goes on.
  • Food intolerance – example include; lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance or in its more severe form like celiac disease. (The body’s inability to break down lactose or gluten causes smelly gas to build up and eventually be released [12].)
  • Certain medication – antibiotics; like the name implies attacks both harmful and good bacteria including those that aids digestion.
  • Constipation – often indicates a build-up fecal matter in the colon.
  • Infection – excessive growth of certain bacteria in the gut.
  • Colon cancer – aggressive growth of polyps or tumors can cause partial bowel obstruction.

CAN HOLDING A FART KILL YOU OR OTHERS?

fart

According to research, it was discovered that others’ farts can really make you sick. While it’s not clear if fart can be made into a weapon, ‘’there have been reported cases of farts spreading Streptococcus pyogenes, a pathogen that can cause tonsillitis, scarlet fever, heart disease, and even flesh-eating disease”.[19]

Without being told, we now try to hold a fart that would lead to a build-up of heaviness and major embarrassment. A logjam of intestinal gas can provoke abdominal distension, with some gas reabsorbed into the circulation and exhaled in your breath.

Holding a fart for a longer time means the build-up of intestinal gas will eventually escape via an uncontrollable fart. Except your fart can create a super-size earthquake and seismic waves or can make your grandma catch a heart attack, you are less likely going to harm yourself or others.

On the contrary, yes! You can harm yourself and others! But in the words of Mike Pearl, ‘’It would take a large room of people strapped to space toilets, piped into your victim’s breathing mask, or into a gas chamber. But in that convoluted, horror movie–type scenario, the result is a dead person. Who died from breathing farts.’’[16]

In actuality, a fart contains toxins known as asphyxiant which are substances that can cause unconsciousness or death by suffocation [13]  examples found in your fart are nitrogen gas, methyl mercaptan, methane and dimethyl sulphides[16].

Nitrogen can cause inert gas asphyxiation in which the gas acts as a simple diluent to reduce the oxygen concentration in inspired gas and blood to dangerously low levels, thereby eventually depriving all cells in the body of oxygen [14].

According to a publication by Denis Grady and Jan Hoffman on May 7, 2018, ‘’some states in the US have authorized nitrogen gas for the execution of prisoners since the lethal injections are more difficult to get. [15]

Still, a fabulous, record-breaking, Guinness book of record, supersized fart might just be enough to fill a person’s lung, averagely; a person’s lung capacity is about 500 milliliters. Yet, as a rogue assassin planning to kill with a fart, you have to think smarter than that.

DO GIRLS PASS MORE GAS THAN BOYS?

fart

Apart from the anatomic structures and some physiologic differences, there is no notable difference between the sexes. So this issue of who breaks the wind more should not start another battle of the sexes.

Since there is an acceptable amount of gas a normal person should pass in a day, depending on lifestyle and choice of foods it is not strange for a certain group of people to fart more than others.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO NEVER PASS GAS?

fart

No! In as much as there are bacteria in the guts and the person is human, it practically impossible. While it might seem to disappear because you stop being mindful of it, it’s conceivable that it leaks out gradually or absorbed by the lining of your gut, but the physical science of farts are pretty direct.

Characteristically, a fart is a bubble of gas; in the long run, it’ll find its way out of your anus. It has nowhere to go, besides out of your body, either as a fart, a belch or burp.

DOES FLATULENCE INCREASE WITH AGE?

fart

According to a post by discover magazine on Mar 7, 2018, ‘’Elderly individuals are at higher risk for developing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, which can cause bloating and increased flatulence.’’ [21]

Where I am from, a younger person dare not giggle or show any sign of discomfort when an elder farts. You’re expected to say sorry sir I hope you aren’t hurt. Apologies to our senior citizens, yes, truth be told, older people are likely to fart more.  Increased age has been linked to lactose intolerance and slower digestion.

CAN EXCESSIVE GAS BE A SIGN OF CANCER?

Understanding Pancreatic Cancer symptoms is critical to early detection. Pancreatic cancer occurs when uncontrolled cell growth begins in a portion of the pancreas. Tumors grow, and these hampers the way the pancreas works. Pancreatic cancer could be difficult to manage, usually, symptoms show at a later stage [23]

Symptoms may include but not limited to:

  • Weight loss.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Abdominal discomfort

The most likely warning signs are; Digestive or bowel complaints such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Gas pains
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Belching

WHAT OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE EXCESSIVE FLATULENCE?

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Eating disorders.
  • Dumping syndrome.
  • Diabetes.
  • Crohn’s disease.
  • Celiac disease.
  • Autoimmune pancreatitis.
